Sheffield Corporation
Review by: Tuesday
Never has Sheffield Corporation been filled with so much atmosphere and aura. It was only a small space and on a weekday, but the second the band came on stage their presence filled the room 100 times over and they had every member of the crowd's attention held for the entirety of their set. It was an absolutely magical experience to be part of that audience.
The band knows how to work any size crowd well and they have so much character and presence. There were fantastic guitar breaks from Tristan Hart Pierce and thoughtful drumming from Will Andrews. They have a very energetic keyboard player in Benjamin Anderson providing great sounds and a saxophonist Gregor Lothian adding a jazzy vibe. Their bassist Dan Spalding plays a mixture of double bass and bass guitar. Yes he isn't Duff, who is a brilliant musician, but the band were just as good without him that night and the addition of a player who can play double bass adds a whole new and totally different fantastic dynamic.
Musically this is a perfect mix of musicians who are fronted by one of the
best front men we have seen in years. The enigmatic Jeff Angell has the
most perfect vocals with a great range and delivery. He scarily goes from
roaring like a lion to singing the sweetest most angelic notes you've ever
heard and can switch between dark and broody to bluesy to angelic within
the same song. He is a fascinating highly talented frontman, lyricist, poet
and musician. He also moves around the stage with so much swagger and
soul that you are totally lost in the performance and any thoughts about
anything other than what's happening right there and then are lost.
This gig really brought their albums to life, at one point Jeff jumped down from the stage and danced with everyone in the crowd to a particularly stylish number. It was magical!
You must watch this band now! The performance was a whole experience to be appreciated in full from start to finish, but the particularly energetic sounds of The whole world's watching, the beautiful soul of Leave me in the dark and the swagger of A place like this really added to the beautiful majestic night that was Thursday 13th September Walking Papers at Sheffield Corporation.
